Hunger in Indiana

15% of Indiana households struggled to put  food on the table in 2015.

1 in 7 Hoosiers were food insecure from 2012 to 2014, U.S. agricultural agency says, compared to 1 in 10 a decade ago.

  • In Indiana, 910,870 people are struggling with hunger - and of them 279,840 are children.
  • 14 percent of Hoosiers live below the poverty line
  • 12 percent of households in Indiana struggle to put food on the table.
  • Proper nutrition is vital to the growth and development of children.
  • Research indicates that even mild under-nutrition experienced by children during critical periods of growth impacts behavior, school performance, and their overall cognitive development.
  • One of every 6 children in Indiana are at risk of hunger
  • Emergency food assistance plays a vital role in preventing widespread hunger:
        — 813,000 people in Indiana received SNAP (formerly food stamps) in 2010.
        — 432,000 children received free or reduced price lunch
        — 174,000 mothers and children received WIC benefits
